Synopsis:
Wonder, by R. J. Palacio |
What I Love:
Anyone who has ever encountered another person with a difference so stunning that you've struggled with the proper reaction will want to read and share this picture book.
Under the urging of her publisher, the author turned her book into a picture book, choosing to do the illustrations herself in ProCreate, to get her message to an even wider audience. This is one of those stories you need to prepare kids for future interactions. We all hope we will do and say kind things, but until we walk a mile in someone's shoes (or ASK what should and shouldn't be said) we never know quite how we will respond.
A sweet, simple story with a powerful message.
Bonus:
2. You'll find great interviews with the author on Brightly, NPR, and Publisher's Weekly.
3. Get involved or give to Choose Kind, the charity inspired by the original Wonder. PW shares more info.
4. On Mondays, I blog Middle Grade book reviews with the MMGM gang. Many of them have reviewed Palacio's MG version of Auggie's story. Here are links for our fearless leader Shannon Messenger, and a handful of my other MMGM reviewer friends: Heidi, the Geo-Librarian, Cindy, Pam, and Sue and her kitty.
5. Bible Study Tools has compiled a list of 40 verses which teach kindness and Bible Reasons has another dozen on being God's unique creation.*

I'm glad that this story was published as a PB. So important for kids of all ages. Loved the novel and look forward to the movie! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I knew you'd like it!
DeleteI am so happy that the message and heart of Wonder can now be encountered by a young crowd. Though i would definitely have them all read the novel too as soon as they can!
ReplyDeleteGood suggestion. Thanks!
DeleteWOW! I love that they made this book into a PB, kind of like Ivan, the Shopping Mall Gorilla started out as a middle grade novel. Great review, Joanne...and I am so grateful to you for adding it to PPBF and bringing it to my attention!
ReplyDeleteI still have to find the Ivan PB. Thanks for the reminder. I have often thought publishers should take advantage of the opportunity to reach different audiences with the same/similar material from an author. So glad they are doing it now: Hidden Figures, too.
DeleteI loved Wonder and am glad there's now a picture book version for the younger set. Can't wait to get my hands on this one. Thanks for letting us know about it!
ReplyDeleteIt's my pleasure to add it to the list. Thanks.
DeleteJoanne, I loved this book. And I am looking forward to the movie. On an aside - CONGRATS on being chosen as a CYBILS Round 2 Judge! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou too! Thanks. See you in the trenches.
DeleteI loved being a Cybil's judge - enjoy!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved round one, so on to round two! Thanks.
DeleteThis. All the feels. I can't wait to see the movie. What a cast! so happy there's a PB version and agree, it's delightful.
ReplyDeleteHope the movie is worthy. Looking for ward to more from this author. Thanks for your feedback.
DeleteLooking forward to this book in all of it incarnations. It could change the course of a generation. I know people who are living life differently because of it. Just. Wow!
ReplyDeleteYeah, A great reminder of why I work in children's publishing. Thanks.
